For The Long Game, I sat down with Kamal Hotchandani, co-founder and CEO of the Haute Group, an ecosystem consisting of Haute Living, Haute Residence, Haute Jets, Haute Beauty, Haute Wealth, and more than a dozen other titles and verticals operating across 20 global markets. Since 2004, Kamal has built what started as a single South Florida magazine into a luxury media ecosystem that speaks directly to an audience whose primary homes average over $10 million.

Born in Belize to an Indian family, shipped to boarding school in upstate New York at nine years old, Kamal developed his entrepreneurial instincts early. He hired older cousins and flipped school merchandise before he was a teenager. He caught the internet wave in Boston, raised capital into .com-era companies, and eventually landed on a vision that would define his career: use media as a seat at the table. If he could sit across from the world's greatest entrepreneurs and document what made them, that access would compound into something no MBA could replicate.

Two decades later, it has. Kamal counts Richard Branson, Jorge Perez, Tony Robbins, and some of the most recognizable luxury brands in the world as long-term partners. And now, as AI reshapes the publishing landscape, he's betting that reputable media and the new discipline he calls Generative Engine Optimization will be more valuable than ever.

txt-takeaways2
  • Why Kamal views media not as a content play but as a community infrastructure, and how that distinction shaped every major partnership Haute Media has built over 20 years.

  • The Richard Mille story: how a startup watch brand engineered the "billionaire secret handshake," why Sylvester Stallone stopped Kamal mid-meal to admire his wrist, and what made it leapfrog multi-generational Swiss institutions.

  • How Kamal helped DJ Khaled overcome a 13-year fear of flying, and how that story became the origin of Haute Jets, which now runs 300+ charter trips a year and sources real estate buyers mid-flight.

  • The evolution from SEO to GEO: why the AI era is the biggest opportunity he's seen since the early web, how Haute Media is reconfiguring its content to achieve visibility inside ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, and why being a cited source in an LLM today is like owning a keyword in 2005.

  • Why 40% of incoming leads for one of the world's top cosmetic dentists now reference Claude or ChatGPT, and what that signals for every high-end service provider still thinking in terms of Google rankings.

  • His framework for long-term brand alignment: why he only partners with talent that is low-risk and high-impact, and how he thinks about the DNA of multi-generational luxury houses.

  • Why the corridor between Miami and Palm Beach represents the greatest concentration of wealth in the world, and why Kamal believes no city offers a better infrastructure for building a luxury business right now.

  • His advice for playing the long game: document your end goal, align with people who've done it at the level you aspire to, and understand that the five people around you are not just company; they're the ceiling.
